Truth About Zane Campaign
The scandal
On 8th February 2014, seven-year-old Zane Gbangbola tragically died after floodwater from a contaminated landfill site entered the basement of his home in Chertsey, Surrey.
In the early hours of the morning, Zane and his parents, Nicole and Kye, fell seriously ill after the floodwater carried deadly hydrogen cyanide gas (HCN) into the family’s house. Zane suffered a cardiac arrest, while Kye also went into cardiac arrest and was later left paraplegic due to HCN poisoning.
Despite the evidence, the coroner ruled at an inquest two years later that Zane’s death was not caused by contaminated floodwater but by carbon monoxide poisoning from a petrol pump.

Did You Know?
On the night Zane died, the Surrey Fire and Rescue HAZMAT team found high levels of HCN in Zane’s home. A major incident was declared, and the area evacuated. No carbon monoxide was detected in Zane’s home.
During pre-inquest hearings, the coroner ruled that key evidence would be excluded, including Kye’s diagnosis of HCN poisoning, expert testimony confirming the petrol pump could not have been the cause, and Environment Agency research highlighting the unacceptable risk of migrating gases posed by the landfill.
Kye and Nicole faced a phalanx of public authority QCs, were denied legal aid for representation, and had to crowd fund for their child’s inquest.
Why We Need Hillsborough Law
“The bottom line is that Zane died and authorities lied…We come before you as grieving parents denied all rights to truth and justice, even the right to grieve in peace”
